Adult Treatment

Adult Treatment

When it comes to orthodontic treatment, age does not matter. As a matter of fact, adults make up more than 20% of the population receiving treatment.

While correcting the alignment of teeth is a key part of a child’s future dental health, it is never too late for an adult treatment to improve your dental health. Straight teeth and aligned jaws can prevent tooth decay, gum disease, headaches, and biting or chewing problems. Correcting the alignment of teeth as an adult can drastically improve your confidence, leading to some real life changes.

You Have Options!

Typically, when adults think of orthodontics, they think of a mouth full of metal braces. However orthodontic treatment has changed over the years and aren’t like those braces you remember from your childhood. York Orthodontics specializes in multiple types of treatment, some that are close to invisible so people won’t even know you are straightening your teeth!

Ceramic Braces: Also known as clear braces, the appliances are clear and blend in with the colour of your teeth. They work the same way as traditional braces but are nearly invisible from a distance.

Invisalign Aligners: These clear, plastic aligners are virtually invisible. Instead of being cemented to the teeth like traditional or ceramic braces, your Invisalign trays can be removed when brushing, eating and drinking.

Lingual Braces: Also known as Incognito braces, the brackets are 100% custom made and bonded behind your teeth. The work the same way as traditional braces, the only thing that’s different is they are completely hidden so nobody will know you have them.

You can always stick to traditional, metal braces which still provide a great option for straightening teeth.

Life With Braces

The team at York Orthodontics believe that orthodontic treatment should not interfere with your lifestyle. Therefore, when it comes to planning your treatment, we will ensure that your treatment options are ideal for you. However, regardless of what treatment option you decide on, your mouth will take some time to adjust to the new appliances. Many patients notice a slight difference in the way they chew and speak. These changes are to be expected and you will naturally adjust to them in no time!

Maintaining excellent oral health throughout your orthodontic treatment is essential. You will have to maintain proper brushing and flossing habits throughout your treatment to avoid decalcification. Everything you will need to maintain good oral hygiene will be provided to you at your start appointment. Other than that, you will find that you will naturally transition into your treatment and your braces will fit into your lifestyle.

Length of Treatment

Younger children and teens who go through orthodontic treatment are still growing. Meaning braces are able to align the teeth and jaws while they are still growing. This can make the process faster than a patient who is finished growing. Adults teeth are already set in place, which can slightly increase their overall treatment time. Adult tend to have denser bones which can also lead to teeth moving slower than a child. Depending on the severity of the case, treatment time can range anywhere between 6 months to 3 years.

Can I Have Braces With Crowns?

If your previous dental treatment has included crowns, don’t worry! Orthodontic treatment is still possible and just as effective. If you have opted for a treatment plan that includes brackets, they will just be cemented to the teeth with a different adhesive. Another great treatment option for patients with crowns is Invisalign, because they do not require any adhesives.

What About Implants?

If you currently have dental implants, they cannot be moved with braces. However, people with missing teeth can have dental implants placed once your other teeth are aligned and your orthodontic treatment is completed. This way, the dental implant can be placed correctly in the space in between your straight teeth.

What if I Have or Need Fillings?

We see lots of people who have existing fillings seek orthodontic treatment. Misaligned teeth could actually be the reason why you developed cavities. Crooked teeth are much more difficult to clean, making you more prone to cavities than one with straight teeth.

Any existing cavities must be filled prior to starting orthodontic treatment. If you get cavities throughout your orthodontic treatment, you can still get a filling. However, braces can be difficult to work around so there is a possibility that your archwire or a few brackets will have to be removed to complete the filling.
