Protect Your Braces This Halloween!

Considering October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and Halloween is creeping up on us, Dr. Mir would like to provide you with some helpful tips on how to keep your braces and mouth healthy this Halloween!

Unfortunately, braces do come with a lot of restrictions on what you can and can’t eat. Below, is a reminder of all the sweets you should be avoiding.  As well as a list of treats you will be able to enjoy this Halloween!

Hard and sticky candies are orthodontists enemies. They have a track record of braking brackets, bending wires and damaging teeth, which can delay your valued treatment time!

Avoid eating candies such as:

  • Starbursts
  • Tootsie Rolls / Taffy
  • Jelly Beans
  • Taffy
  • Gummies
  • Skittles
  • M & M’s
  • Nuts
  • Jaw Breakers
  • Jolly Ranchers

Don’t worry, we have good news! Chocolate is OKAY! Softer and less sticky chocolates are suggested if you want to indulge in some sweets this halloween! However, make sure to limit your daily chocolate intake. Keep in mind that your braces are fragile so, try to avoid chocolate that is too hard or contains bits of toffee or caramel. A good tip is to eat it in smaller pieces.

You can enjoy candies such as:

  • Kit Kat Bars
  • Hershey Kisses
  • Three Musketeers
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
  • Peppermint Patties
  • Ice Cream
  • Smoothies
  • Apple Cider

Happy Halloween from York Orthodontics!
